SetFilter vs BEx variables

Hi all

I'm wondering if I correctly understood the way Design Studio filtering approaches work:

Using SetFilter method filters the resultset without any access to back end (should have nearly immediate results...), whereas using BEx variables consists in adding a filter to the BEx query, i.e. implying to query the back end again... Am I right?
