Has anyone figured out conditional formatting of crosstabs based on a Universe?

I've crawled through the posts and manuals and have spent a couple odf days now playing with CSS with zero luck on getting conditional formatting working on my cross tab. Seems like this should be an easy task in Design Studio but it's certainly not. Hoping someone out there has gotten this working and can help all the rest of us that are stuck on why ours won't work.

Here's where i am right now with my crosstab.

I've turned on Conditional Formatting as expected and i would think that this should be bound to the data to make it dynamic.
It's tied to my DS_2 datasource and i'm not sure why but i selected a data cell as the next property requires this. I'm guessing it's because DS needs to know what area of my table to conditionally format and here it would be the data cells.

I then defined a formatter function which to me makes no sense as it returns a boolean value rather than a string for a css style so all i did was create a simple if statement to check if a value was above 20 then return true otherwise false. From here i'm absolutely lost, there's no where to specify colors or tie them to more ranged thresholds or anything. Is this functionality for Bex only? If so it shouldnt be displayed when using UNX as a source. If its truly for all sources, then how do you use it with a Universe? Has anyone had any luck with this?

Thanks all for your help!
